“Mother Accused of Abandoning Kids in Burning Home”

A mother of four is accused of ignoring the cries of her children as she observed her family home burning on a security camera and allegedly abandoned them to their fate, as revealed in court proceedings.

Shania Lee, 25, is charged with two counts of negligent manslaughter and one count of negligently causing serious harm for reportedly driving away from a house fire where three of her children, Izabel, 5, Kalais, 3, and Lyvia, 2, were left unattended.

Firefighters rescued the unconscious children from the rear of the residence on September 8 last year after neighbors alerted authorities. The family had only moved into the house a week earlier.

Witnesses stated that the children were trapped inside the burning property for about an hour, struggling to survive. Despite being rescued and rushed to the hospital, Izabel and Lyvia tragically passed away, while Kalais survived after being placed in a medically induced coma.

Lee, released on bail by Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, has a fourth child who was not present during the incident in Sydenham, Melbourne.

During court proceedings, Detective Senior Constable Christopher Mitchell testified that he believed Lee was aware of the fire when she left the premises. The fire, suspected to have originated in the couple’s bedroom, erupted around 9:18 pm. Lee and her partner Matthew McAuliffe, 23, were seen departing the property shortly after the fire began.

Allegations suggest that Lee and McAuliffe left the children alone in the house to go “steal a car door” for Lee’s vehicle. Upon their return, they found emergency services at the scene. The police revealed that Lee did not seek help for her children.

Investigators suspect that Lee was discussing the incident with McAuliffe while he was in prison, mentioning that she had watched the security cameras and heard screams. The court was informed that Lee had declined to provide a statement and had been uncooperative with authorities.

Lawyer Sam Norton defended Lee, arguing that it was unclear if she knew the severity of the situation when she left the house. However, detectives maintain that she was aware of the danger.

Lee, who has a history of legal issues, including drug use, has been granted bail but faces pending charges related to previous offenses. She is scheduled to appear in court next year.
