“Florida Toddler Strangled by Mother’s Python”

In a tragic incident, a two-year-old girl from Florida met a horrifying fate when she was strangled in her crib by her mother’s malnourished 8-foot Burmese Python.

The snake named “Gypsy” took the life of Shaiunna Hare in 2009 as her mother, Jaren Hare, 32, failed to properly secure the snake’s cage and provide it with adequate nourishment. While Shaiunna was asleep, the python slithered into her bed, coiled around her neck, and attempted to asphyxiate her.

In a frantic 911 call, Darnell, Hare’s partner, expressed his shock as he discovered the tragic scene and fatally stabbed the snake. Hare was later convicted of aggravated manslaughter and child neglect in connection with her daughter’s death. She served a 12-year prison sentence and was released in 2021.

Despite their incarceration, Hare and Darnell maintained their relationship and expressed plans to marry upon their release, although they will be on parole until 2026. Darnell also served a 12-year prison term for the same charges but was released nine months before Hare.

When contacted for comment, Hare declined to speak to the media. During their trial, the defense argued that the couple never anticipated harm from their previously docile pet.

Shaiunna’s father filed a lawsuit against the Florida Department of Children and Families for wrongful death, alleging negligence. A settlement was reached between Joseph and the department.

The jury, rejecting the defense’s claims of a tragic accident, emphasized the couple’s responsibility to protect the child from harm. Following the verdict, Darnell tried to comfort Hare, while the prosecution highlighted the defendants’ accountability for the child’s tragic death.
