“Don’t Miss Out: £25 Cold Weather Payment Alert!”

Recipients of benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are being urged to keep an eye on their bank accounts as a one-time payment of £25 may be forthcoming through the Cold Weather Payment scheme. Concerns have been raised that individuals might overlook this extra money showing up in their accounts.

The £25 payments are allocated to individuals receiving 6 specific benefits, provided they meet certain eligibility conditions, during periods of sustained freezing temperatures. This financial assistance is directed to people residing in regions where temperatures dip below zero degrees Celsius or are expected to drop below freezing for a continuous seven-day period.

Despite the payments being automatically issued to eligible recipients, there is a concern that some may overlook the additional funds in their bank statements. Fiona Peake, a personal finance expert at Ocean Finance, pointed out that individuals at risk of missing out on Cold Weather Payments include those who qualify for the benefits but do not regularly monitor small deposits in their accounts.

Peake identified three groups of individuals who might fail to recognize the supplementary payment. She explained, “Since the payment is automated, no application is required. However, individuals who are in the process of moving, have changed bank accounts, or do not routinely check their statements may easily overlook it. The £25 payment is made for each seven-day cold spell, making it possible to miss it in the bank statement.”

She added, “It could be obscured among other transactions, especially if there are regular debits or credits.” The payment will be listed on bank statements as ‘DWP CWP’ for England residents and ‘SSA DWP’ for those in Northern Ireland.

In Scotland, the Cold Weather Payment scheme has been substituted with the Winter Heating Payment, a one-time £59.75 payment that is disbursed regardless of the weather conditions. To check if a Cold Weather Payment has been triggered in your area, you can use the postcode checker on the Government website.

Individuals receiving specific benefits may be eligible for Cold Weather Payments. However, there are additional qualifying criteria that must be met. For example, Universal Credit claimants can receive the payment only if neither they nor their partners are employed or ‘gainfully self-employed’, and they must meet one of two further conditions.

Either the claimant or their partner must have a health condition or disability affecting their ability to work, or there must be a child under 5 years old residing with them. Nevertheless, if an extra amount is received due to having a disabled child, eligibility for the payment is typically assured regardless of employment status.

The complete eligibility rules can be accessed on the Government website. Peake advised, “If you believe you are eligible, your postcode has been triggered, and you have not received the payment, contact the Pension Service, Jobcentre Plus, or your Universal Credit helpline to verify.”
