Toto Wolff recently shared an interesting encounter involving Lewis Hamilton and Brad Pitt, revealing how Hamilton straightforwardly expressed to Pitt that he was too old to realistically portray a Formula One driver in a movie about World Championships. This conversation, which left Pitt unimpressed, led to revisions in the film’s script.
Initially, Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes, was scripted as a seasoned racer challenging top competitors for a championship victory. However, after a discussion with Wolff, Hamilton, and others during the project’s early stages, the character was transformed to make a comeback in Grand Prix racing in his 50s. In the revised script, he partners with rising star Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris, for the struggling fictional team APX GP.
Wolff recounted the pivotal dinner where the script adjustments were influenced, mentioning how the original concept of Pitt’s character fighting for a World Championship was altered based on Hamilton’s feedback. The revamped storyline was well-received and deemed credible by the team involved in the project.
The F1 film, backed by Hamilton as executive producer, achieved remarkable success, impressing critics, captivating new fans, and setting box office records as the most financially successful sports movie ever, generating £467 million ($628 million) worldwide.
Additionally, the positive response from key figures in the racing community was affirming. Sky recently enhanced its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports package, now offering HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+, and Hayu, along with 135 channels and comprehensive Formula 1 coverage.
Wolff expressed satisfaction with the film’s premiere in Monaco during the grand prix, noting the unanimous approval from F1 drivers and team principals. The movie’s entertainment value and exceptional revenue generation were highlighted as significant achievements.
