London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticized US President Donald Trump, accusing him of racism, sexism, and Islamophobia. Trump referred to Khan as a “terrible” mayor during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York. Khan responded by suggesting that he seems to occupy a significant space in Trump’s mind. Khan emphasized that he heads a diverse, successful city and questioned why Trump is fixated on him.
Khan also pointed out that Trump’s comments reflect a pattern of discriminatory behavior, labeling Trump as racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic. Despite Trump’s criticism, Khan highlighted the record number of American visitors to London, attributing it to the city’s cultural richness, economic prowess, and opportunities for individuals.
Various politicians, including Cabinet minister Pat McFadden and Health Secretary Wes Streeting, rejected Trump’s assertion that London desires sharia law, emphasizing the city’s adherence to British law and its global significance. Labour MPs expressed support for Khan, with Dame Emily Thornberry praising his progressive values and dismissing claims of him promoting Sharia Law.
MPs Rupa Huq and Rosena Allin-Khan condemned Trump’s remarks as deceitful and called for the US ambassador to be summoned over the Islamophobic comments. They reiterated London’s commitment to diversity and denounced racism and bigotry while lauding Khan’s leadership in making London a global hub of inclusivity and progress.
