Jessie-Lou Harvie, a 14-year-old from Blantyre, Lanarkshire, started feeling unwell on February 10, 2024. She described waking up with weakness in her legs and eventually becoming completely paralyzed from the chest down. Rushed to the hospital by her parents, doctors delivered the heartbreaking news that she might lose her ability to walk.
Diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological disorder causing spinal cord inflammation, Jessie-Lou underwent extensive treatments in Glasgow and London. Despite the challenges, she found support through online communities and specialized hospital care.
After weeks of rehabilitation and therapy, Jessie-Lou made progress, transitioning from a wheelchair to using a Zimmer frame for supported walking. Seeking further specialized care, she was referred to Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, known for its expertise in spinal cord injuries.
At the hospital, Jessie-Lou engaged in various physical activities, received tailored physiotherapy, and participated in educational and recreational programs.
