Cabinet minister Pat McFadden has dismissed Donald Trump’s assertion that London desires sharia law as a misunderstanding of the city’s essence. The remarks from Keir Starmer’s top aide came in response to the US President’s criticism of London Mayor Sadiq Khan during a speech at the UN General Assembly.
In his address, Trump criticized Khan, labeling him a “terrible” mayor and suggesting a shift towards sharia law in London. McFadden refuted these claims, emphasizing that London operates under British law, not sharia law, and praised the city as a vital asset to the UK.
Regarding Trump’s comments, McFadden highlighted the significant role London plays in the UK’s economy and cultural landscape, emphasizing its importance as the capital city. A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan dismissed Trump’s remarks as bigoted and affirmed London’s status as a welcoming and safe city for all.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended Khan’s leadership, emphasizing his inclusive approach and dedication to improving various aspects of London life. Labour MPs also stood in support of Khan, denouncing Trump’s statements as falsehoods and reaffirming London’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
In response to the escalating tensions, calls were made for the US ambassador to address Trump’s Islamophobic rhetoric. The MPs reiterated their pride in Khan’s leadership and emphasized London’s reputation as a diverse and tolerant city under his governance.
