“Lidl Named Most Affordable Supermarket by Which?”

Lidl has once again been named the most affordable supermarket by Which?, surpassing Aldi for the second time in recent months. In October, a list of 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46, dropping to £120.38 for members of their loyalty program, Lidl Plus. The same basket of goods at Aldi came to an average of £121.

Although Aldi has held the title of the cheapest supermarket 22 out of the last 24 months, according to Which? analysis, Lidl’s recent victory has turned the tables. The comparison included a variety of both branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For Tesco shoppers, the total bill last month would have been £134.89, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. Sainsbury’s, on the other hand, tallied up to £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.

In a broader comparison of 187 items, Aldi and Lidl were excluded due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets. Asda emerged as the most cost-effective option for a larger shopping list, costing £469.11. The same items would have totaled £476.11 for Tesco Clubcard holders and £481.34 at Morrisons with a More loyalty card.

Waitrose, known for its premium offerings, was the priciest option for both small and large shopping lists in October. The analysis by Which? factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts but did not consider multibuy offers.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on Lidl’s win, highlighting that Asda remains a budget-friendly choice for shoppers seeking a wide range of branded products. With concerns over rising food prices, especially leading up to Christmas, the analysis emphasizes the importance of comparing prices across supermarkets, potentially leading to savings of up to 26%.
