Tom Aspinall’s father and coach, Andy, has disclosed that his son continues to experience vision loss in his right eye due to a severe injury sustained recently. The reigning heavyweight champion was preparing to defend his title at UFC 321 against Ciryl Gane. During the fight, Gane started off aggressively, landing significant punches and maintaining a defensive position.
As the round progressed, Gane accidentally poked Aspinall in both eyes, causing a pause in the match. Referee Jason Herzog allowed Aspinall a five-minute break, but concerns arose when the champion reported impaired vision to the ringside doctor and referee. Ultimately, the fight was stopped and ruled a no contest.
Following the incident, Aspinall was promptly taken to the hospital for further evaluation. After undergoing assessments in Abu Dhabi and returning to the UK for additional tests, Aspinall’s father provided an update on his condition post-UFC 321.
In a recent video shared on Aspinall’s YouTube channel, he revealed the details of their medical consultations. The doctors expressed concern about the severity of the injury, noting the continued vision loss in Aspinall’s right eye. Further tests, including a CT scan, are planned to assess the condition of the eye.
After the fight, members of Aspinall’s team expressed astonishment at the lack of action taken against Gane for the eye poke incident. Video footage revealed Aspinall’s frustration with the situation, highlighting the impact on his performance and the need for stricter enforcement.
The upcoming UFC event features Steve Garcia facing David Onama in Las Vegas on November 1st. The preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 8pm UK time, with the main card starting at 11pm UK time. Viewers in the UK can catch the live action on TNT Sports.
