British Couple Held by Taliban in Afghanistan Released After 8 Months

An elderly British couple that was held captive in Afghanistan has been released by the Taliban after spending almost eight months in confinement. Barbie Reynolds, 76, and her husband Peter, 80, who have been long-time residents in the country, were relieved to regain their freedom following extensive efforts by their family to secure their release. The couple was detained back in February while traveling to their residence in Bamyan Province, central Afghanistan, with the circumstances surrounding their detention remaining undisclosed. They have now been freed and are on their way to Doha after successful mediation by Qatar.

Mrs. Reynolds expressed gratitude for the treatment they received during their captivity at Kabul Airport, stating that they are eager to reunite with their children and even considering a return to Afghanistan, as they hold Afghan citizenship. A Qatari official informed that the couple, who have lived in Afghanistan for nearly twenty years, will undergo medical evaluations before continuing their journey to the UK. It was confirmed that they were moved from Kabul’s central prison to a larger facility during the final negotiations phase.

Barbie and Peter, who have been together since the 1960s and married in the Afghan capital around 50 years ago, refused to leave Afghanistan despite the Taliban’s recent control. Their son Jonathan Reynolds had previously raised concerns about their deteriorating health while in captivity, emphasizing the urgent need for their release. He described the challenging conditions his parents faced, including being detained without charges and experiencing health issues due to lack of sunlight and outdoor access.

The couple’s family is now looking forward to their reunion in the coming hours, following their release from captivity.
