“UK Braces for Intense Storms with 65mph Winds”

A menacing red hue dominates the weather maps as strong winds of up to 65mph are forecasted for intense storms.

The upcoming bout of unfavorable weather is on the horizon for Tuesday morning across most of the UK, with rain expected, particularly heavy in south Wales and parts of Devon. The downpour will progress slowly northward, with most regions experiencing rainfall by midday. The southwesterly winds could reach speeds of 65mph, especially along the coastal areas of Devon, north Wales, and inland across the Peak District.

Although temperatures are not yet cold enough for snowfall nationwide, wintry conditions are anticipated later this month. While the Isles of Scilly recorded temperatures exceeding 13C on Friday, a drop in temperatures is expected by the end of the following week, according to meteorologists.

The storm expected on Tuesday increases the risk of flooding, with several warnings already issued, including for Dorset and Devon. Flooding is expected even before Tuesday due to high tides, strong winds, and large waves, particularly around Plymouth Sound, Wembury Bay, and tidal estuaries.

West Wales experienced over 31mm of rain on Friday as a low-pressure system moved southeastward, bringing heavy rainfall to Devon and Cornwall. Camborne in Cornwall received 26.6mm of rain on Friday. Given the already saturated ground in these regions, the Met Office is likely to issue weather warnings for the expected wet and windy conditions on Tuesday.

Deputy chief meteorologist Steven Keates of the Met Office stated, “A deepening area of low pressure will approach the UK from the southwest later on Monday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds that are likely to impact the UK between late Monday and early Wednesday. This system has the potential to cause disruptions, and severe weather warnings are expected to be issued soon. We advise the public to stay updated with the latest Met Office forecasts.”

Low-pressure systems will dominate the weekend, with lighter rainfall expected. Showers are expected to persist in northeastern Scotland this morning, followed by wet conditions in north Wales this afternoon.

According to the Met Office website, “Rain will continue to move northeastward in Scotland, with intensity decreasing in the morning. Elsewhere, expect sunshine and showers, some heavy with gusty winds. Mild conditions for December.”

Following the Met Office’s snow forecast for the Christmas holidays, temperatures are set to drop again, with temperatures feeling as cold as -6C in Aberdeenshire and -2C in the Welsh Valleys in the coming days. The cold spell is expected to persist intermittently leading up to the Christmas period, as per the long-range forecast released by the Met Office.
