“Labour Lord Urges UK Govt to Reunite Gaza Families”

A member of the Labour party who escaped the Nazis as a child is urging the Government to reconsider regulations that are causing separation among families in Gaza.

Lord Alf Dubs has penned a letter to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, requesting permission for students to bring their spouses and children along. Lord Dubs emphasized the dilemma faced by students admitted to British universities who are compelled to make a distressing choice between their families and their educational aspirations.

The 92-year-old former child refugee, who arrived in the UK in 1939 through the Kindertransport initiative, highlighted the detrimental effects of immigration policies that divide families. He shared his personal experience, stating that many children brought to the UK during the Kindertransport never reunited with their parents.

While commending the Government for enabling fully funded students from Gaza to pursue studies in UK universities, Lord Dubs expressed concern over the current prohibition on students bringing their dependents. He stressed that this restriction is coercing students to sacrifice either their family or their academic future.

Presently, students are not permitted to relocate with their families under the existing regulations. Lord Dubs highlighted the predicaments of individuals like Manar, a prospective PhD student at Glasgow University with three young children, and Loay, who has an offer for a fully funded Masters program at Oxford University but cannot leave his wife and infant behind.

Lord Dubs emphasized that although the number of affected individuals is relatively small, estimated at fewer than 25 children and spouses of eligible students, the repercussions of family separation are enduring. Recently, a cohort of 34 Palestinian students arrived in the UK from Gaza to commence their studies, marking the first such group since 2023.
