“Man Jailed for Sharing Nude Photos of Teen with Mother”

A man, currently 49 years old, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for sharing nude photos of a 16-year-old girl with her mother. James O’Neill was also informed by the judge that he would be under supervised license for an additional 12 months after his release due to his concerning attraction to children. He had admitted to multiple charges related to indecent images of children and threatening behavior.

The Belfast Crown Court was informed that in November 2018, the teenage girl discovered her nude photos circulating on Snapchat, causing her distress. Despite not knowing the girl, O’Neill contacted her immediately upon seeing the images, engaging in conversation and persistently trying to establish a relationship with her, even after being rejected multiple times.

O’Neill’s actions escalated when he demanded more photos from the victim, becoming hostile and aggressive when she refused. He threatened to harm her and disclosed her images publicly. He even managed to locate the girl’s mother on Instagram and sent her the illicit photos. The matter was reported to the police, leading to O’Neill’s arrest in March 2021, during which numerous indecent images and videos were found in his possession.

During police questioning, O’Neill denied his actions and the threats made to the victim. His defense attorney highlighted his lack of prior criminal behavior, attributing his actions to alcohol dependency. Despite this, the judge emphasized the fear and degradation O’Neill caused the victim, especially considering her young age.

The court sentenced O’Neill to 12 months in prison, along with a supervised license, registration as a sex offender for a decade, and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for five years. All seized material was ordered to be destroyed to prevent further dissemination.
