David Lammy criticized Nigel Farage’s “pound shop patriotism,” warning that it could have detrimental effects on Britain. Lammy, the Deputy PM, condemned Farage’s proposal to revoke indefinite leave to remain, labeling it as racist. Speaking at the Labour Party Conference, Lammy emphasized that Farage’s policies do not align with British values despite his attempt to associate himself with national symbols.
Describing the plan as racist, Lammy called on the party to reject the idea of rounding up and deporting individuals, including French, Indian, and Caribbean neighbors who already possess indefinite leave to remain. He stressed the importance of embracing true patriotism that uplifts society rather than the shallow version that could bring the country down.
In urging the party to seek inspiration from progressive movements globally, Lammy pointed out success stories from countries like Australia, Canada, and Norway, where progressive parties overcame significant deficits to win elections. He emphasized the need for aligning with core values to achieve victory.
Highlighting the potential impact of Reform UK’s proposal to eliminate Indefinite Leave to Remain, Lammy warned that hundreds of thousands of residents in the UK could face deportation if the plan is implemented.
Keir Starmer, on Sunday, echoed Lammy’s sentiments, criticizing Farage’s agenda as divisive and harmful to the community. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the neighborly bond and called for a strong stance against Reform UK’s policies.
