Barber’s Quick Thinking Saves Teen from Cancer

A young man’s life was saved by a barber who noticed a lump on his neck that turned out to be a rare form of cancer. Firat Davutoglu spotted the lump while giving 17-year-old Owen Norgrove a haircut and urged him to seek medical advice. Following a visit to the GP, Owen was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system, and promptly began intensive chemotherapy treatment.

Owen, an agricultural apprentice from Ludlow, Shropshire, is currently in remission and is hopeful for a clean bill of health by next June. His mother, Hayley, praised Firat for his quick observation, which led to an early diagnosis and treatment initiation. Owen underwent a rigorous five-month chemotherapy regimen at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with support from the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Reflecting on the incident, Owen expressed gratitude towards Firat for alerting him to the lump on his neck, acknowledging that it potentially saved him from more severe consequences. Firat, the barber, recounted how he noticed the swelling on Owen’s neck during a routine haircut and advised him to consult a doctor, not knowing the gravity of the situation at the time.

Despite the initial shock of the diagnosis and the challenging chemotherapy process, Owen’s resilience and the support of his community helped him overcome the cancer. He has now triumphed over the disease and is looking forward to a healthy and cancer-free future, with a newfound appreciation for life and the individuals who played a role in his recovery.
