As Storm Bram approaches the UK with powerful winds and heavy rain, the public is being advised to take precautionary measures. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is urging people to prepare for the storm by ensuring their mobile phones are charged and avoiding unnecessary travel, especially in areas under amber warnings or at risk of flooding.
The storm is expected to hit the UK on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing wind gusts of up to 90mph in north-west Scotland. Additionally, the saturated ground in Wales and south-west England increases the likelihood of flooding, potentially causing structural damage and transportation disruptions.
Yellow warnings have been issued for various regions in the UK, including Wales, south-west England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, with gusts forecasted to reach 50-60mph, and locally exceeding 70mph. These conditions, combined with heavy rain, pose significant safety risks leading to hazardous travel conditions, delays, and cancellations.
To stay safe during the storm, it is crucial to stay updated on official weather forecasts and follow instructions from local authorities. Securing outdoor items like bins and garden furniture is recommended to prevent potential damage. Assembling an emergency kit with essentials such as torches, batteries, and non-perishable food items is advised.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speed during heavy rainfall, maintain proper visibility with headlights and windscreen wipers, and avoid aquaplaning by adjusting speed and ensuring adequate tire conditions. Caution is advised when driving on waterlogged roads, avoiding deep water and checking brakes after passing through flooded areas.
Steve Cole, director of Policy and Impact at RoSPA, emphasized the importance of securing homes and staying vigilant on the roads during Storm Bram. By following these safety measures, individuals can protect themselves, their homes, and contribute to community safety amidst the challenging weather conditions.
