Rory McIlroy has introduced a new award to recognize the top-performing DP World Tour player in the Majors each season, excluding himself despite his recent Masters triumph. The prestigious Rory McIlroy Award was unveiled by the DP World Tour just ahead of the season-ending DP World Tour Championships, honoring the player who excels in all four Major Championships annually.
Although McIlroy is ineligible to win the award named after him, he expressed his appreciation for the recognition. This accolade marks his fifth award named after him on the DP World Tour, acknowledging his remarkable on-course accomplishments and unwavering support for the tour, including participation in events in India and Australia in the upcoming months.
Reflecting on the significance of the award, McIlroy stated, “It’s a huge honor to have an award bearing my name, recognizing the top DP World Tour player in the four major championships throughout the year. I look forward to presenting it to the deserving winner next year after the majors conclude.”
At 36 years old, McIlroy joins an elite group of golfers who have achieved the career Grand Slam, following legends like Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. He shared that the idea for the award was initially discussed with him by DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings following his recent triumph at Augusta.
McIlroy emphasized the long-term significance of having an award associated with his name on the tour, aiming to inspire future generations of golfers. As he competes at the DP World Tour Championships seeking a fourth consecutive Race to Dubai victory, McIlroy aims to surpass the record he shares with Seve Ballesteros and Colin Montgomerie for the most wins in the competition.
