Jade Thirlwall recently shared that she will not be making money from one of her latest songs. The former X Factor contestant dropped her debut album, “That’s Showbiz Baby!” on September 12, featuring a sample from Diana Ross and The Supremes’ iconic track. However, Jade clarified that she had to forgo profits from using this sample.
The British singer from South Shields incorporated The Supremes’ 1965 hit “Stop! In The Name of Love” into her song “Before You Break My Heart.” Expressing uncertainty about fans’ reception of the track, Jade mentioned that she was able to utilize the sample under the condition that she would not earn royalties from it.
In an interview, Jade expressed surprise at the popularity of “Before You Break My Heart” online, despite her initial doubts. She disclosed that she forewent royalties to secure the sample for the track.
Jade’s album has achieved the No. 3 position in the UK midweek charts, with expectations of climbing to the top spot by the week’s end. However, Jade herself believes that Ed Sheeran might claim the top spot instead, as he also released his album, “Play,” on the same day.
As a solo artist, Jade has already landed two singles in the UK Top 40 chart. Her debut single, “Angel of My Dreams,” peaked at No. 7, while “FUFN” reached No. 25 in March.
“Angel of My Dreams” appears to contain references to Simon Cowell, with whom Little Mix, Jade’s former group, signed their first record deal after winning X Factor in 2011.
Apart from her music career with Little Mix, Jade has received accolades, including three BRIT Awards with the group and one as a solo artist for best pop act. She is also gearing up for a nationwide tour next month.
Meanwhile, Jade’s former bandmates have pursued solo endeavors. Perrie Edwards is gearing up to release her debut solo album later this month, following several single releases. Leigh-Anne Pinnock released her own album in May last year.
Jesy Nelson, who departed from Little Mix in 2020, has not announced plans for an album but released a single titled “Boyz” featuring Nicki Minaj.
Perrie will also feature in an upcoming BBC documentary titled “Girlbands Forever,” exploring the dynamics of groups like Little Mix.
