A new concern has arisen regarding the potential for Christian Brueckner, the suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, to flee abroad upon his release from prison. Brueckner, a 49-year-old convicted paedophile, is scheduled to be freed from Sehnde prison after serving a seven-year sentence for rape. As part of his release conditions, he will be required to wear a GPS ankle tag to track his movements.
Despite the monitoring device, Brueckner’s lawyer, Friedrich Fuelscher, has expressed doubts about its effectiveness if Brueckner decides to leave Germany. Fuelscher stated that the ankle cuff becomes ineffective once Brueckner crosses the German border, emphasizing that his client has plans post-release. Reports indicate that Brueckner will be issued a German identity card, must maintain a permanent address in Germany, surrender his passport, and regularly report to the probation service.
Even without a passport, Brueckner could easily evade authorities to another EU country, complicating efforts to apprehend him. Prosecutors are still seeking evidence to charge Brueckner in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance, with concerns about the challenges of arresting him if he manages to flee Germany undetected.
Brueckner’s lawyer continues to assert his client’s innocence, noting Brueckner’s mixed emotions about his impending release. Media outlets from the UK, Germany, and Portugal have gathered outside Sehnde prison in anticipation of his freedom. Although German prosecutors identified Brueckner as the prime suspect in the Madeleine case in 2020, no charges have been brought against him despite ongoing investigations and legal proceedings.
German search teams conducted a three-day search for evidence in Portugal where Brueckner resided near the location where Madeleine went missing. Her parents, Kate and Gerry, were dining with friends when she disappeared, and they maintain hope for her safe return.
