O’Sullivan, working as a pundit on Eurosport, advised Wells to remain a part-time player rather than pursue a return to the professional circuit, stating that Wells lacks the mental fortitude to compete at that level.
Despite O’Sullivan’s negative assessment, Wells managed to reach the last 16 of the same tournament, even defeating the current world number one, Judd Trump. Unfazed by O’Sullivan’s comments, Wells quickly returned to the World Snooker Tour, currently holding the 41st position in the world rankings.
With upcoming UK Championship qualifying rounds on the horizon, Wells acknowledges that O’Sullivan’s words serve as motivation for him to excel. In contrast, O’Sullivan suffered a 4-0 defeat by Shaun Murphy in the Riyadh Season Snooker Championship’s first round. Murphy swiftly eliminated the 49-year-old in just over an hour of play. Despite this loss, O’Sullivan is set to compete in the upcoming UK Championship, commencing on November 29, where he will face the current world champion, Zhao Xintong, in the quarter-finals.
