Matchroom CEO Frank Smith has refuted claims that the upcoming fight between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua will be fixed. Reports emerged last week indicating that Joshua and Paul were in the final stages of arranging a bout set for this Christmas. The heavyweight showdown is now officially scheduled for December 19 in Miami, consisting of eight three-minute rounds with both fighters using 10oz gloves.
The outcome of the fight will be reflected in their professional records. Jake Paul, who has faced fixing accusations since his debut in 2020, has consistently denied any wrongdoing in his fights. Critics within the boxing community have criticized the match between the 28-year-old and Joshua, with many suggesting it could be ‘rigged.’
Smith, a key figure in Eddie Hearn’s team, downplayed these concerns ahead of the anticipated clash between Paul and Joshua. He emphasized that it is a standard eight-round professional fight without any unusual stipulations. The much-anticipated battle between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul is set to take place in Miami on December 19. Regarding the fight, Smith stated, “AJ would not have taken it if that was the stance it had to be… if it was an exhibition, if it was ‘you have got to hold him up for eight rounds.’ It would not suit Anthony Joshua. Anthony Joshua is going in there to knock out Jake Paul. And that is what you will see on December 19.”
Jake Paul initiated the challenge to the two-time heavyweight champion earlier this year, with both fighters agreeing to a future fight during a phone call. However, discussions faded until recently. Paul’s last fight was a decision win against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June. A planned bout against Gervonta Davis was canceled due to legal issues faced by Davis. Subsequently, Paul sought out other opponents, leading to Joshua accepting the challenge.
Smith shed light on the quick progression of the fight negotiations, highlighting the unexpected nature of Joshua’s decision to take on Paul. He acknowledged that managing the fight was not a move he would have recommended, noting Joshua’s elite status in the sport.
