A man who stalked actress Anna Friel for three years has been sentenced for his harassment campaign. Former British Airways pilot Phil Appleton, 71, repeatedly contacted the 49-year-old actress with sexual messages and made unwanted visits to her home. He left strange gifts, including empty cigarette packs, during the period of January 1, 2022, to December 11, 2024.
Appleton, who had a history of mental health issues, sought advice from friends on how to communicate with Friel without being seen as a stalker. Friel, known for her roles in TV shows like “Brookside” and “Marcella,” expressed feeling threatened by the persistent stalking, stating that the experience made her constantly vigilant.
The stalking began after Appleton approached Friel while she was out with her daughter. He later bombarded her with emails professing his love and desire to marry her. Despite Friel’s lack of response, Appleton’s obsession escalated, leading to him showing up at her home dressed inappropriately and sending messages indicating plans for a wedding.
Appleton was eventually arrested in December 2024 and admitted to a mental health facility. Following his release in February 2025, he was placed on conditional bail and later pleaded guilty to a stalking charge. He received a restraining order and a community sentence as punishment.
