Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared relaxed just days before his upcoming wedding and the start of filming his next movie. Johnson, in casual attire, visited Toronto’s Revue Cinema to discuss “Tony,” a biopic focusing on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s posthumous fame following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson felt comfortable sharing his story.
Johnson initially had no intention of making a film about Bourdain but changed his mind after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. Inspired by Sessa’s perspective on various issues, Johnson saw an opportunity to explore these themes together.
The film, drawing from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential,” centers on one summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain began his culinary journey. By focusing on Bourdain’s youth, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of portraying the older, established Bourdain. The narrative delves into Bourdain’s complex relationships and his journey into adulthood.
“Tony” offers a fresh perspective on Bourdain’s life, aiming to resonate with his admirers. Johnson emphasized the collaboration between Sessa, himself, and Bourdain’s essence in creating the film. The movie is set to premiere in Canadian theaters on August 14.
In the movie, Sessa portrays a young Bourdain mentored by a chef in Provincetown, played by Antonio Banderas. This unique take on Bourdain’s formative years aims to capture the essence of the celebrated chef and author.
