The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into a collision between a police cruiser and a civilian vehicle that occurred in Pickering, Ontario, on Friday. According to SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon, the incident took place on Kingston Road around 7:30 p.m. when a Durham Regional Police Service officer, responding to an emergency call, was involved in the crash at the intersection of Kingston Road and Brock Road.
The civilian vehicle occupants were taken to the hospital, with one child sustaining a serious injury. Durham police confirmed that their officers were en route to a call when the collision occurred, prompting the SIU to intervene under its mandate, as explained by Const. Nick Gluckstein in an email to CBC Toronto.
Following the incident, Kingston Road was shut down at Brock Road in both directions, and southbound traffic on Brock Road from Finch Avenue was also halted for the collision investigation, as per updates shared by Durham police on social media. By early Saturday morning, the roadways had reopened for regular traffic flow after the necessary assessments were completed.
