Top-ranked men’s player Jannik Sinner withdraws from Cincinnati Open

Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked men’s tennis player globally, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Sinner, who last played at Wimbledon, where he secured his second consecutive title, also withdrew from the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old Sinner, a holder of five Grand Slam titles, is only missing a French Open victory to achieve a career Grand Slam.

In a statement released by tournament officials, the Italian player stated, “After discussions with my medical team, I regretfully announce my withdrawal from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event. Despite intensive efforts with my medical advisors, my right knee issue persists, and I must acknowledge that I am not yet fit to compete. I am saddened to miss Cincinnati but am looking forward to returning next year and preparing for the U.S. Open.”

Sinner’s decision to withdraw comes after Carlos Alcaraz also opted out of the Cincinnati tournament due to a wrist injury. As a result, fans in Cincinnati will not witness the top two men’s players in action when the singles competition commences.

Two years ago, Sinner claimed victory at the Cincinnati Open, a crucial lead-up to the U.S. Open. Subsequently, he went on to win the U.S. Open title. However, last year, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the U.S. Open final. The 23-year-old Spaniard will aim to defend his championship when the main draw of the tournament kicks off on August 30.
