After several action-packed days at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the initial phase of competition is coming to a close. The Corner Brook Civic Centre was abuzz with fervor as ball hockey players from various regions of the province vied for top honors on Tuesday.
In the gold medal match, Team Mount Pearl South emerged victorious over Team Avalon with a narrow 4-3 win. Thirteen-year-old Raine Foss from Paradise clinched the winning goal and expressed his elation at seizing the opportunity. Reflecting on the game, Raine shared, “I made a strategic play, found an opening, and scored. Representing MPS is a tremendous honor; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Raine’s teammate, Reid Swain, was thrilled to depart Corner Brook with the coveted gold medal. He remarked, “We’ve put in months of hard work, and honestly, we weren’t sure if we could pull it off. But we did, and it’s an amazing feeling.”
Despite not achieving the desired medal color, Team Avalon’s Ryan Walsh is departing Corner Brook with cherished memories. “The whole experience of staying with teammates, the camaraderie, and all the activities we did was fantastic,” he shared.
Team Central secured the bronze medal, a source of pride for 14-year-old Jack Stone, who is returning to Grand Falls-Windsor with a sense of accomplishment. Jack expressed, “It’s truly exhilarating, you know? Going into the tournament with uncertainty and then coming out with a medal is truly gratifying.”
The Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games continue to showcase the dedication and sportsmanship of young athletes across the region, promising more thrilling competitions in the days ahead.
