Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting results at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100-meter butterfly race and later clinched a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medals to five in the competition. Her personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly placed her behind American Gretchen Walsh, who won in 55.15 seconds, while Australian Alexandria Perkins took the bronze with a time of 56.75.
Reflecting on her performance, Ruck expressed satisfaction with her race and attributed her success to proper rest and trust in her preparation. McIntosh, on the other hand, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event despite winning the B final. Taking full responsibility for the outcome, McIntosh admitted her misjudgment in the morning heats and vowed to learn from the experience.
In other events, Canadian swimmers Tierney and Ekk claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, from Toronto, finished second with a time of 1:56.29, while Ekk followed closely with a time of 1:56.85. The gold medal in the event went to Japan’s Yumeki Kojima in 1:55.38. Tierney, celebrating his breakthrough victory, credited his success to dedicated training.
Ruck continued her medal streak by leading Canada to a bronze medal in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event. The team, consisting of Ruck, Harvey, Tigert, and Fack, finished in 3:36.44. Meanwhile, the U.S. team claimed gold in 3:29.32, with Australia taking silver in 3:31.11. On the men’s side, the Canadian 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan.
