Toronto Hydro has announced that power has been reinstated to numerous residents in the eastern part of the city and sections of downtown following an outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. According to the utility’s social media update at 10:30 p.m., power has been fully restored by its crews. Toronto Hydro expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the outage and thanked customers and the community for their patience during the restoration process.
The outage, which affected more than 31,000 customers as of 9:40 p.m., was attributed to a loss of supply from Hydro One, as indicated on Toronto Hydro’s outage map. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) noted that elevators and escalators at several Line 2 subway stations were impacted by the outage at one point.
Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) reported a power failure in multiple buildings, prompting immediate evacuations or advising individuals to steer clear of the affected areas. The buildings affected included Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall at the Toronto Campus. TMU emphasized that evacuations were necessary due to potential safety system compromises, such as fire detection and sprinklers.
TMU instructed that all classes, labs, and exams be put on hold during the evacuation period. Employees were advised to seek alternate work locations or take breaks nearby until power was fully restored.
