Ottawa native Gabriela Dabrowski and Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic have progressed in the Cincinnati Open women’s doubles tournament. They secured a victory against the fourth-seeded team comprising Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 during the Round of 32 on Monday. The match lasted for one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the first time Dabrowski and Krejcikova have teamed up. Their next challenge awaits them against the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16 scheduled for Tuesday.
In another match, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, and her partner Sara Errani of Italy emerged victorious after a one-hour, 29-minute battle against Tamara Korpatsch of Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Monday evening.
Although Fernandez and Errani dominated the first set in just 31 minutes, Korpatsch and Webley-Smith fought back in the second set, even leading 6-5 and serving for the win. However, they fell short of closing out the match. Fernandez and Errani displayed a solid performance with two aces, 23 winners, only one double fault, and a total of nine unforced errors out of 34. Their next opponents in the Round of 16 will be Chan Hao-ching of Taiwan and Maya Joint of Australia.
Previously, Fernandez faced defeat against Xiyu Wang of China in the women’s singles event’s second round on Sunday.
