Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to deliver a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France next month, as confirmed by his office on Wednesday. During his visit, Carney will engage with members of the European Parliament to enhance the ties between Canada and the European Union for the mutual benefit of both nations, as per an official statement.
The day before his speech, the prime minister will also attend the State of the European Union address, a significant annual event delivered by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. This event holds great political importance in Europe.
Carney’s efforts to strengthen relations with Europe come in the midst of Canada’s trade tensions with the United States. Following the breakdown of trade discussions between Ottawa and Washington over the weekend, Canada has been seeking closer ties with the EU.
Over the past year, Canada has entered into various partnership agreements with the EU and became the first non-European country to join Security Action for Europe, which offers €150 billion in defense spending loans.
The European Commission spokesperson highlighted Carney’s visit as a symbol of the strong bond between Canada and the EU. The spokesperson emphasized the shared intention and ambition of both parties to elevate their partnership during these challenging times.
However, Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman expressed reservations about Carney’s decision, suggesting that he should convene Parliament before traveling abroad to address another legislative body.
