Camryn Rogers from Canada and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw events, respectively, during the recent Diamond League competition held in Chorzow, Poland.
Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at the Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt. She currently holds the titles of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. American DeAnna Price secured the second spot with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third place at 71.95 meters.
Continuing the Canadian dominance in hammer throw, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the men’s event with a top throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg is now the holder of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titles in the event. Germany’s Merlin Hummel came in second with a throw of 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász finished third with 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland. The reigning world champion, Oblique Seville from Jamaica, set a meeting record with a winning time of 9.83 seconds, followed by two-time Olympic silver medalist Kenny Bednarek from the United States in second place with a season-best 9.87 seconds. Former world champion Christian Coleman claimed the third spot with a time of 9.93 seconds.
In the women’s 100m race, American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden took the victory with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred finished second in a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while American athlete Sha’Carri Richardson secured third place with a time of 10.96 seconds.
The men’s 1,500m race saw American Ethan Strand achieve an unexpected win with a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan teenager Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech took second place in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third with a time of 3:31.16. Norwegian star Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished fourth in the race.
The upcoming Diamond League meeting is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, before the final in Brussels. The season will culminate with the World Athletics Ultimate Championship from September 11-13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in men’s hammer throw, while Rogers will not participate due to the event not being part of the championship program for women’s hammer throw athletes.
