“Canada Invests $4.7 Billion in Via Rail for New Cars”

In a significant move under the Buy Canadian Policy, the federal government is investing over $4.7 billion for Via Rail to purchase and maintain 313 new passenger rail cars from Alstom Canada. This marks the first time in 40 years that Via Rail’s passenger cars will be entirely manufactured in Canada, as opposed to being predominantly sourced from the United States.

During an event at the Alstom Plant in Thunder Bay, Ont., Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the importance of the project, emphasizing that Canadian workers, including electricians, machinists, and welders, will play key roles in the production process. The project is expected to create jobs and boost the economy, with manufacturing and assembly taking place in Thunder Bay and La Pocatière, Que., and design work in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Que.

Alstom Americas’ President and CEO, Michael Keroullé, described the contract as a historic opportunity to replace aging rail cars that are over 70 years old. The new fleet will enhance the travel experience for passengers with a variety of sleeper cars and panorama dome cars.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from local organizations and communities, as it signifies job security for workers at the Alstom Plant in Thunder Bay. Justin Roberts, president of Unifor Local 1075, expressed relief and optimism about the stability this contract brings to the workforce, allowing employees to invest in their futures without the fear of job insecurity.

Mathieu Paquette, interim CEO of Via Rail Canada, emphasized the significance of rail service as a lifeline for many Canadians, highlighting the essential role that Via Rail plays in connecting communities. The contract is seen as a major investment in critical infrastructure, supporting economic growth and job creation in Ontario and Quebec.

Charla Robinson, president of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, commended the collaborative effort that led to securing the contract, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the local economy and manufacturing sector. Despite ongoing global uncertainties, investments like these are seen as pivotal in strengthening communities and ensuring long-term opportunities for growth and development.
