A man has been arrested by Toronto police in connection with a recent incident where multiple vehicles were set on fire at the residence of a Scarborough MP. Roshvin Crofton, 24, faces several charges, including arson causing property damage, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of flammable materials, and violation of probation. Authorities have seized a 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to be linked to the arson and are seeking information about its whereabouts before the incident.
The arson took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid, who represents the federal riding of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East. According to police, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles in the driveway on August 27, poured an accelerant on them, set two cars on fire, and fled the scene, causing damage to a third vehicle.
Zahid expressed gratitude towards Toronto police following the arrest but mentioned that the motive behind the arson is still unknown. She stated that she will refrain from further comments until more information is revealed. Zahid, a Liberal member of parliament since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and serves as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.
The incident garnered condemnation from various political figures, with Prime Minister Mark Carney denouncing it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” Police are continuing their investigation and are searching for a second suspect related to the case.
