“West End Library Search Faces Hurdles, Advocates Remain Hopeful”

A search for a new location for a library in the west end of St. John’s has encountered a setback, but an advocate remains optimistic about finding a suitable spot soon.

The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago following the expiration of its rental agreement.

According to a report by AllNewfoundlandLabrador, a call for proposals by the provincial government to secure a new site did not attract any submissions.

Josh Smee, vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, expressed frustration and disappointment over the situation. Despite its small size, the library was popular among patrons.

Smee emphasized the importance of reopening the library in the west end and lamented the delay caused by the unsuccessful tender process.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is working with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next course of action, ensuring that the library remains in the west end of St. John’s.

Smee urged landlords with available space in the area to participate in the process, as potential hosts may have overlooked the initial tender. He is hopeful that a revised tender will yield positive results in the near future.

Many library users, like Juanette Anthony, have felt the impact of the library’s closure, citing its convenience and essential services like computer access. Anthony expressed a desire for the library to reopen in a larger space with increased resources.

The community’s strong attachment to the library and the dedication of its staff were highlighted by Smee, underscoring the importance of restoring this valuable resource to the neighborhood.

Overall, efforts are ongoing to secure a new home for the library, with stakeholders and advocates working towards a successful outcome for the benefit of the community.
