Stampede Winner Faces Prize Dilemma

Calgarian Curtis Geiger experienced a turbulent week recently. Following his purchase of a 50/50 ticket at the Calgary Stampede rodeo on July 11, he discovered on Monday that he held a winning ticket valued at $125,150. Geiger was overwhelmed by the news, expressing his disbelief and excitement to a colleague, contemplating the possibility of early retirement.

Eager to claim his prize, Geiger promptly contacted the Calgary Stampede. However, disappointment set in when he received an email response informing him that the 48-hour window to claim his winnings had lapsed, and all prizes for the draw had either been claimed or expired.

The Calgary Stampede explained that the Showband 50/50 lottery operates under regulations set by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis authority. They emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules and timelines stipulated in the lottery license. Geiger, however, highlighted that the ticket did not clearly specify the 48-hour claiming period, leading to confusion and frustration on his part.

Geiger expressed his discontent with the perceived brevity of the claim window and questioned the handling of unclaimed prize funds. According to the Stampede, unclaimed prizes are allocated to the Stampede and the Calgary Marching Show Band Association in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Legal expert Farhad Shekib suggested that Geiger might have a legal case based on a breach of contract, citing the importance of transparent communication regarding timelines for claiming prizes. Geiger, contemplating legal action, aims to raise awareness to prevent similar situations for others in the future.
