Poilievre Advocates for Strong Canada-U.S. Trade Bond

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed that Canadians are feeling unsettled and perplexed by the recent focus on Canada and its economy by U.S. President Donald Trump. During a visit to New York to advocate for normal trade relations, Poilievre stated that Canada’s sudden position as a target is causing confusion.

Poilievre emphasized the long-standing interconnected economic ties between Canada and the U.S., which have historically brought peace and prosperity. He stressed the importance of pursuing tariff-free trade to benefit both nations, acknowledging past grievances such as buy-America policies and tariffs on softwood lumber.

In his efforts to combat tariffs and support job creation on both sides of the border, Poilievre announced plans to engage with investors and business leaders. He highlighted his primary focus on American citizens, advocating for mutually beneficial trade relations to enhance safety, prosperity, and affordability for both nations.

Additionally, Poilievre disclosed his intention to remain in New York for the 25th anniversary of 9/11 to honor the victims and commemorate the unity between Canadians and Americans following the tragic events.

During an interview on CNBC, Poilievre declined to criticize Prime Minister Mark Carney’s actions during recent trade negotiations, emphasizing his commitment to representing Canada’s interests abroad and avoiding domestic political disputes. He emphasized the importance of leveraging the strong friendship between Canada and the American people to strengthen bilateral relations.

Poilievre’s stance was commended by co-host Joe Kernen, who praised his diplomatic approach and refusal to engage in political attacks while abroad. Poilievre underscored the value of collaboration among like-minded nations that uphold principles of free speech, free markets, and freedom, proposing a united front to address common challenges and reinforce the Western alliance.

Looking ahead, Poilievre highlighted the mounting challenges and competitors facing the U.S., suggesting that a collective effort with allied nations could create a robust North American partnership based on shared resources and values.
