A 27-year-old woman named Alexandra Marie Frost has been sentenced to ten years in prison following the discovery of disturbing CCTV footage showing her mistreatment of her young son.
In March 2023, Frost brought her two-year-old son to the hospital, where medical tests revealed his low blood sugar levels and unusually high insulin levels, requiring immediate treatment. Healthcare professionals observed concerning patterns in the child’s health, suspecting a potential case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental health disorder where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in a dependent.
After noticing anomalies in the toddler’s glucose levels, staff at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital decided to investigate further by installing a camera in the boy’s room. The CCTV footage captured Frost injecting her son’s foot with a syringe, causing the child visible distress.
Medical experts confirmed that the insulin injections Frost administered could have led to serious health complications, including death, as the child did not require insulin treatment for any medical condition. The child was found with an injection site on his foot that did not match hospital protocols, indicating foul play.
Frost, who was the primary caregiver during her son’s hospital stay, pleaded guilty to child endangerment and administering harmful substances. She received the maximum sentence of ten years in prison, with each charge carrying a consecutive five-year term. The child was removed from Frost’s care by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and has since shown improvement in his health.
