UK sporting events are facing disruption on Sunday afternoon due to the Government’s scheduled emergency alert test, which will trigger phones to emit a loud siren sound nationwide at 3pm. Approximately 87 million phones are expected to playback the siren sound during this test, marking the first such trial since April 2023.
Previously conducted five times, including during Storm Darragh and Storm Eowyn, the emergency alert is a critical tool for providing crucial information during emergencies. The loud alert on phones has sparked concerns about potential disruptions or delays during sporting events on Sunday.
The emergency alert test aims to evaluate the functionality of such alerts during crises or life-threatening situations like floods or storms. Every individual connected to a 4G or 5G network in the UK will receive the alert, emphasizing its importance in saving lives during real emergencies.
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, highlighted the significance of the test in safeguarding lives during emergencies. The test will involve a ten-second loud siren sound on all connected phones, even those on silent mode.
While citizens will be informed that it is a test and no immediate action is required, phones on airplane mode or switched off will not receive the alert. Reconnection to the network may trigger the alert shortly after, as it broadcasts from phone masts to all devices within a specific area.
Sporting events, such as the England cricket team’s ODI against South Africa and the Rugby Super League derby clash between Hull KR and Hull FC, will be impacted by the alert. Organizers are prepared to manage interruptions and keep attendees informed during the events.
Additionally, the Old Firm game between Celtic Women and Rangers Women in Scotland will be delayed to accommodate the emergency alert test. The Great North Run participants are expected to finish before the sirens sound, minimizing disruptions to the event.
