“Eilish McColgan Aims for Victory in Great North Run”

Eilish McColgan is eager to replicate her mother’s success by winning the upcoming Great North Run on Sunday. Despite narrowly missing out on victory twice before, the Scottish athlete is determined to secure a win this time among the 60,000 participants.

Having lost the top spot in a close finish last year, McColgan is determined to outperform herself in this edition of the half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields. Expressing her excitement, she mentioned the race’s iconic status and the history of renowned winners.

Reflecting on her past achievements, the 34-year-old McColgan, a former Commonwealth 10,000m gold medalist, has faced setbacks due to injuries. However, she recently made her marathon debut in London, breaking her mother’s Scottish record in the process. She sees the Great North Run as valuable preparation for her upcoming marathon in New York.

McColgan emphasized the significance of conquering a marathon to boost her confidence and overcome mental barriers. Despite setbacks in her career, she remains optimistic about the future, viewing the lost time as a potential opportunity for future success.

In the elite men’s race, Marc Scott leads the British contingent aiming for victory. He faces tough competition from defending champion Abel Kipchumba, Alex Mutiso Munyao, and Bashir Abdi.

As an Ambassador for Science in Sport, McColgan endorses SiS’s BETA Fuel Energy gels, the Official Nutrition Partner of the AJ Bell Great North Run, which she uses herself.
