“O2 Alerts: 3G Phaseout to Impact UK Internet and Messaging”

Alerts have been issued by O2, warning of potential internet and messaging app disruptions due to the network’s plan to phase out its aging 3G technology in various UK regions. This update comes as part of the transition following O2’s integration with Virgin Media.

The 3G signal from O2 has already been terminated in several locations including Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Watford, and Torquay, with parts of Scotland next in line for the switch-off.

Effective November 5, 2025, users with 3G-only devices will no longer be able to access data services, meaning limitations on activities like sending emails, using WhatsApp, and browsing websites without Wi-Fi. While basic phone calls and SMS will still function, data services will be unavailable.

The initial shutdown of 3G will affect eastern areas like Aberdeen and Dundee, with nationwide completion planned by the end of 2025.

Reasons Behind the 3G Phaseout

Introduced in 2003, 3G technology is outdated and inefficient compared to modern standards, prompting its discontinuation. The move aims to reallocate resources for improved 4G and 5G services, as 3G’s slower speeds of around 3Mbps pale in comparison to the capabilities of newer technologies.

Impact on Users

Though a minority still rely on 3G, most consumers now possess 4G or 5G-compatible devices. O2 is offering free 4G-ready devices to affected customers and discounted upgrades for those without 4G capability. Other major networks like EE and Vodafone have already completed similar shutdowns to enhance network efficiency.

Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York, emphasized the impending shift towards faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks, advising affected individuals to promptly upgrade their devices to ensure continued mobile data access post 3G phaseout.
