A weather system named Storm Benjamin poses a significant risk to life as it threatens eight counties in the UK with wind gusts reaching up to 70mph. Experts have advised the public to prioritize safety by staying indoors and taking necessary precautions. British Weather Services has issued an uncommon Amber weather warning for Thursday due to the impending storm.
Forecasters at MeteoFrance have identified Storm Benjamin, currently located over northern Spain, to make its way to the UK starting around 6pm today. Senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services emphasized the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the potential life-threatening conditions in specific regions due to the strong winds and heavy rainfall.
The storm is expected to first impact the Southwest of England before moving across southern counties, including London, and eventually heading towards East Anglia and the North Sea. Wind speeds are anticipated to reach 60 to 70mph in various areas, posing risks especially in regions like East Anglia, Essex, Kent, and parts of London.
As the storm progresses, gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely across other areas like the home counties, Dorset, Hull, and the Midlands. The most severe impacts are anticipated in the southeast of the UK with regions such as Essex, Kent, East Anglia, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, and Humberside facing the brunt of the storm’s force, particularly by tomorrow morning.
Looking ahead, the Met Office anticipates sunny spells and blustery showers on Friday, with lingering strong winds and potential coastal gales, especially in the east and northeast. The weekend will bring colder temperatures as an Arctic Maritime airmass follows Storm Benjamin, bringing a mix of sunny intervals and wintry showers, particularly in Scotland. Sunday may offer brief respite with drier conditions before rain returns later.
