“Williams’ Appeal Hearing Set Over Sainz Penalty”

The FIA has set the date and time for Williams’ appeal to be reviewed by Formula 1 stewards. Williams pursued a right of review following a penalty imposed on Carlos Sainz at the recent Dutch Grand Prix.

Sainz expressed frustration at Zandvoort after being penalized for a collision with Liam Lawson, receiving a 10-second penalty and two points on his racing license. The Spanish driver contested the decision during the race and met with stewards post-race. Williams sought a review hearing, confirmed during the Italian Grand Prix.

The FIA announced the hearing will take place on Friday, September 12, at 2:30 pm UK time, conducted virtually to accommodate Zandvoort stewards. While the time penalty cannot be overturned, Williams aims to revoke the two penalty points.

Team principal James Vowles emphasized the importance of a direct discussion with stewards for clarity in future races. Right of review hearings have historically favored the FIA, with most requests since 2019 not upheld.

The scheduled hearing will follow a two-part format, where Williams must present new, relevant evidence. Should the stewards acknowledge this element, a representative from Lawson’s team, Racing Bulls, will participate.

Williams currently holds fifth place in the constructors’ championship with 86 points, while Racing Bulls aim to challenge them, ranking seventh with 61 points, just below Aston Martin.
