Max Verstappen’s GT Racing Debut: Slow Start or Steady Progress?

Max Verstappen experienced a slow start in his debut GT racing appearance. The Formula 1 world champion seized the opportunity during his break between the Italian and Azerbaijani Grands Prix to participate in endurance racing at the iconic Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany. Unlike his recent victory at Monza where he clinched pole position, Verstappen began this race by being overtaken by seven cars before the first turn due to driving in ‘detuned’ conditions in a Red Bull-colored Porsche Cayman GT4 #980. This was because, despite his skills, he is still awaiting his full racing license for the Nurburgring track.

After acquiring a B permit on Friday, Verstappen was able to compete in the weekend races. Despite being handicapped with a reduced power output compared to his competitors in the same class, Verstappen managed to clock an impressive lap time, securing sixth place in his category and 27th overall. To obtain his full license, he needs to complete 14 incident-free laps in his GT4, with plans to race in a Ferrari 296 GT3 in the upcoming 57th ADAC Barbarossapreis.

Former F1 star Ralf Schumacher, brother of Michael Schumacher, voiced his opinion that Verstappen should have been granted his full license immediately given his exceptional driving abilities. Verstappen himself expressed feeling more at ease competing in different racing disciplines, emphasizing the importance of enjoying his time both professionally and personally.
