Ricky Hatton expressed his eagerness for a boxing comeback in a recent interview, but the British sports legend has tragically passed away. The former boxer, aged 46, was discovered at his residence in Hyde, Greater Manchester, where authorities have established a police cordon.
Authorities from Greater Manchester Police disclosed that a body was found at Hatton’s home and confirmed that the incident is not considered suspicious. A spokesperson from GMP stated that a body was located at an address on Bowlacre Road in Gee Cross at 6:45 am today, Sunday, September 14, emphasizing that there is no suspicion of foul play.
Hatton had been preparing for a return to the boxing ring in December, slated to face Eisa Al Dah, Dubai’s first professional boxer. This fight would have marked his first professional match in 13 years, following his retirement after a defeat by Vyachslav Senchenko in Manchester in 2012.
His bout against the Ukrainian boxer occurred three and a half years after his initial retirement from boxing subsequent to a knockout by Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas. Hatton, who would have celebrated his 47th birthday in October, made a brief return to boxing in 2022 for an exhibition match against Marco Antonio Barrera.
The former welterweight and light-welterweight champion had discussed his anticipated return to professional boxing earlier in the summer, expressing his excitement about the upcoming bout. Hatton confirmed the fight via a livestream, explaining that an eye injury prevented his physical presence at the event but reassured fans that the match would proceed as planned.
Known for his struggles with depression and addiction, Hatton had openly shared his challenges and highlighted the positive impact he had on others facing similar issues. In an exclusive interview with SunSport, he reflected on how his journey had inspired many individuals dealing with weight and mental health issues.
With a notable record of 45 wins and 3 losses in his 15-year boxing career, Hatton achieved his career highlight in 2005 by defeating Kostya Tszyu to claim the IBF and The Ring light-welterweight titles. Despite subsequent successes, including defending his titles, he faced a significant defeat against Floyd Mayweather in his pursuit of the WBC and The Ring welterweight championship.
