A member of the Labour party expressed discomfort upon hearing about emails allegedly exchanged between Peter Mandelson and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mike Tapp voiced his unease after being informed about a message containing the words “I think the world of you” during an interview with BBC’s Charlie Stayt. The pressure is mounting on Keir Starmer to dismiss the US Ambassador as discontent within the Labour Party grows.
A member of Parliament stated that there is no support for the Ambassador within the Labour Party, emphasizing that if Lord Mandelson does not resign promptly, the Prime Minister should take action.
During a session in the Commons, Mr. Starmer defended Lord Mandelson, but new emails have surfaced, including one allegedly sent while Epstein was facing legal issues related to child exploitation, expressing admiration with the words “I think the world of you.”
This particular email from 2008 also conveyed Lord Mandelson’s feelings of hopelessness and anger, urging Epstein to fight for an early release. Upon hearing the email read aloud by Charlie Stayt, Mike Tapp visibly reacted with discomfort.
Tapp expressed his disturbance at the nature of the emails, stressing the importance of scrutinizing Mandelson’s statements of regret and awareness at that time. However, he mentioned that it appears the Ambassador will retain his position for the time being.
Calls for Lord Mandelson’s dismissal have intensified, with Labour members demanding immediate action. The sentiment among Labour MPs is one of disapproval, with many indicating a lack of support for Mandelson’s actions.
Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the Prime Minister’s judgement in appointing Mandelson, given the known information prior to his assignment. The situation has led to a divided opinion within the Labour Party regarding the appropriate course of action.
Lord Mandelson expressed regret over his prolonged association with Epstein, acknowledging his misjudgment. While he did not deny a continued relationship with Epstein after criminal charges were filed, he clarified it was not of a business nature.
In response to the situation, US lawyer Gloria Allred, representing Epstein survivors, suggested that Mandelson should willingly submit to questioning by investigators to assist the survivors and address the concerns surrounding his association with Epstein.
