Britons in almost 20 locations are advised to get ready for potential flooding, as warned by the Met Office and Environment Agency. Residents living near water bodies at risk of overflowing are encouraged to assemble essential items like flashlights, batteries, and portable chargers into an “emergency kit” in case of evacuations. The forecast indicates more rainfall expected to hit parts of Wales and Southwest England today, heightening the flood risk.
A total of 17 flood warnings are currently in effect, with the most critical alert issued for the River Ritec at Tenby in Pembrokeshire. Areas near the town’s western caravan parks are particularly susceptible, with Natural Resources Wales reporting significant community disruptions and ongoing severe flooding impacting properties. The situation may persist for several days due to tidal outfall restrictions, causing water levels to rise during high tides.
Wales has nine flood warnings, while England has seven alerts, along with one for Scotland near Glen Lyon in Perth and Kinross. Additionally, multiple less severe alerts are in place, emphasizing the urgency of the current warnings highlighted by red triangles on the map.
In Cornwall, three warnings are active, including the South Cornwall coast from Lizard Point to Gribbin Head, excluding the Tidal Fal Estuary. The public is advised to steer clear of beaches and coastal walkways due to potential flooding. Similar concerns exist at Poole Harbour in Dorset following recent high tides, with more rain anticipated in Southwest England today after showers yesterday.
The River Crake Valley in Cumbria is also at risk of flooding, impacting areas like Low Nibthwaite, Lowick Bridge, Spark Bridge, and Penny Bridge. Residents are cautioned to exercise caution and avoid navigating through floodwaters whether on foot, bicycle, or vehicle.
Although previous weather warnings for South Wales and Southwest England have ended, individuals residing in flood-prone regions are urged to remain vigilant. The Met Office advises preparing flood plans and emergency kits, checking road conditions, and adjusting travel arrangements to avoid potential delays. Additionally, it is recommended to prepare for possible power outages by stocking up on torches, batteries, and mobile phone chargers.
