“UK Foreign Secretary Affirms Support for Ukraine Amidst Russian Aggression”

Yvette Cooper is set to affirm the UK’s steadfast backing for Ukraine during her current visit to the conflict-ridden nation. Making her inaugural journey as Foreign Secretary, Ms. Cooper has journeyed to Kyiv to engage with President Zelenskyy, key ministers, and Ukrainian citizens enduring Russia’s illegal incursion.

The visit comes in the midst of heightened tensions following the downing of Russian drones by Poland and NATO for breaching Polish airspace. It also follows Russia’s most extensive aerial attack on Ukraine since the war’s inception, resulting in the striking of a crucial government edifice in Kyiv.

Ms. Cooper is scheduled to tour the damaged Cabinet of Ministers building and a residential structure ruined by Russia, where she will meet with affected families and children. As part of her visit, she unveiled a £142 million UK aid package to assist Ukraine through the winter and beyond. The funding includes £100 million earmarked for humanitarian aid to support frontline communities, safeguard vulnerable individuals, and provide emergency relief for those impacted by Russia’s ongoing assaults.

The aid will encompass the restoration of essential water and heating systems, bolstering livelihoods, job creation, and fortifying Ukrainian resilience during the fourth winter of Russia’s unlawful conflict. Additionally, £40 million will be allocated to revive Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has suffered significant damage from Russian actions.

This financial commitment aligns with a pledge made by Keir Starmer earlier this year to sustain Ukraine’s resistance against Russia and aid civilians enduring Vladimir Putin’s brutal offensive. Ms. Cooper emphasized the paramount importance of Ukraine’s security to the UK and reiterated the unwavering support extended by the UK, recognizing the enduring threat posed by Russian aggression to Europe and British interests.

Moreover, she is scheduled to hold discussions with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Foreign Minister Sybiha, and Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko during her visit.
