A significant blow was dealt to Vladimir Putin’s military capabilities as key Russian defense-related chemical plants and oil refineries were targeted in a Ukrainian strike. The attack hit the Metafrax Chemicals facility in Gubakha, Perm region, and the Novo-Ufimsky oil refinery in Ufa, approximately 870 miles away from the conflict zone. Additionally, the Kirishi refinery in the Leningrad region, one of Putin’s largest refineries, erupted in flames following the daring strikes by Kyiv, aimed at disrupting Moscow’s operations supporting the illegal invasion of Ukraine. The Kirishi plant, with a capacity to produce 21 million tons of explosives annually, was heavily impacted.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces acknowledged responsibility for the assault on these crucial sites, with ongoing efforts to evaluate the extent of the damage inflicted. Meanwhile, the Metafrax Chemicals plant also faced a separate drone strike, although the local governor assured that there were no casualties and operations would continue as normal. Despite this, a Ukrainian lawmaker reported on Telegram that the drones had caused damage to the facility, which had been newly inaugurated in 2023.
Situated in the Russian Ural mountains about 1,200 miles from Kyiv, the Gubakha region plant became a target for the Ukrainian army’s strategic strikes on energy and chemical installations. These successful actions by Kyiv coincide with Russia’s escalating deadly attacks on Ukraine, including a recent devastating airstrike that claimed the lives of over 20 Ukrainians in a rural village where they were collecting pensions.
Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed the airstrike on Yarova village in eastern Ukraine through a distressing video showing the aftermath of the bombing, resulting in multiple casualties. He condemned the attack, emphasizing the loss of innocent civilians during a vulnerable moment. Zelensky urged European nations, the US, and the G20 to intensify efforts to halt the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for a united global response to Russia’s actions.
In the face of these atrocities, Zelensky stressed the importance of imposing stronger sanctions and taking decisive action against Russia’s aggression, calling on the international community to speak out and intervene to prevent further bloodshed.
