“UK Residents Eligible for Cold Weather Payments as Temperatures Plummet”

Millions of UK residents may soon receive additional funds due to the cold weather sweeping the nation. The Cold Weather Payment program provides £25 for each seven-day period when temperatures drop to or below zero degrees in an area during the winter.

The 2025/26 scheme is now active, allowing eligible households to claim multiple payments for various cold spells. Some may qualify for assistance earlier than anticipated as the Met Office forecasts temperatures as low as -7°C in parts of Britain this week.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow Cold Health Alert for several regions, warning of potential health impacts on vulnerable individuals due to the weather conditions until November 21.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley noted the shift in weather patterns, with colder temperatures and a risk of wintry conditions such as snow and ice across the UK. Frosty conditions with temperatures reaching -7°C in some areas are expected, accompanied by a noticeable wind chill effect.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) administers these payments to eligible recipients. To qualify, individuals must be receiving specific benefits, including Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.

Cold Weather Payments will be automatically credited to bank accounts within 14 working days for eligible recipients. However, those with newborns or children under five moving in must apply for the payment. Residents can check their eligibility for payments in their area using a postcode checker on GOV.UK.

In Scotland, Cold Weather Payments are replaced by the Winter Heating Payment, valued at £59.75, and are not available.
