Even though Halloween is still ahead, supermarkets are already stocking up on holiday-themed food and Christmas gifts, including advent calendars.
A popular tradition during the festive season, many people traditionally purchase advent calendars to mark the days leading up to Christmas with a daily treat. However, the availability of traditional advent calendars is decreasing. Not only are the prices rising for chocolate advent calendars, but there are now a variety of calendars with different gifts, ranging from beauty products to alcohol, some of which can be quite expensive.
While luxury items may justify higher costs in advent calendars, the prices of some chocolate options in supermarkets may surprise consumers.
For instance, while a 90g Cadbury Dairy Milk advent calendar costs £2.50 at Sainsbury’s, the Ferrero Rocher advent calendar (258g) is priced at a steep £17.50 this year.
Although many enjoy Ferrero Rocher chocolates during the festive season, some may question if the brand justifies such a high price tag.
Other notable prices include the Lindt Selection advent calendar (289g) at £16, the Tedddy AR advent calendar (250g) at £15, the NOMO Ultimate Choc advent calendar (320g) at £15, and the Tony’s Chocoloney Countdown calendar (216g) at £12.
Additionally, the Cadbury Heroes advent calendar (230g) is priced at £7.50 this year, while the Kinder Bueno advent calendar (181g) is available for £9.
The Ferrero Rocher advent calendar is even pricier at Selfridges, where it costs £24.99, compared to £17.50 at Sainsbury’s and Ocado.
Boots offers a Ferrero Collection Chocolate Advent Calendar (259g) for £18, while Tesco sells the same product for £15.
Once an affordable Christmas tradition, buying advent calendars now adds to the financial burden of the holiday season for many individuals.
This trend poses a challenge, especially for parents who often purchase multiple advent calendars for their children. Let’s hope they aren’t all Ferrero Rocher enthusiasts!
Sainsbury’s, the Ferrero Group, and Selfridges have been approached for comments.
